Australia is a country as well as a continent. Australia along with independent island nations and dependent overseas territories in the Pacific known as Australia and Oceania is the smallest continent. It is the least populated continent with permanent inhabitants (Antartica has no permanent inhabitant). Australia may be the smallest continent but as a country it is the sixth largest country in the world by land mass. About 23 million people live in Australia with Canberra as the nation's capital and Sydney is the largest city in Australia.
Australia and Oceania is surrounded by Pacific Ocean to the east, Great Australian Bight, Bass Strait and Southern Ocean to the south, Indian Ocean to the west and Timor Sea and Arafura Sea to the north.
There are about 14 independent countries and 12 dependent overseas territories in Oceania. Australia is the largest country in Oceania and Nauru is the smallest country in Oceania. Australia is also the most populas country in Oceania.
